End-to-end Lab Automation Solutions

Ginkgo Automation marries hardware, software, and biology into a quick-to-deploy, comprehensive offering for scientists.

Our Platform

Reconfigurable Automation Carts (RACs)

RACs are standardized enclosures that integrate with most lab instruments. Each RAC includes a dedicated robotic arm, lab instrument of choice, and dedicated MagneMotion track.

Catalyst ACS

Catalyst ACS is modern, web-based automation control software for controlling our RAC systems. It allows dynamic scheduling and running of multiple workflows for multiple users, at the same time, through constraints-based protocol interleaving, ensuring maximum instrument device utilization and uptime.

Catalyst Flow

Catalyst Flow is our support service, which leverages automation support engineers who continuously monitor (5 days/week, 15 hours/day) our customers’ RAC systems, resolving errors in real time. 90-95% of errors can be resolved remotely and before our customers even notice the issue.

Why choose Ginkgo?

>23 hours

Of end-to-end workflow execution in our qPCR-based genomic titering workflow, thanks to robust, error-free execution on the RAC system and our remote troubleshooting service, Catalyst Flow.

88% reduction

In hands-on time when applying Ginkgo Automation to a formerly manual drug discovery workflow

30-40% reduction

In hands-on time compared to a semi-automated NGS library prep workflow, enabling the 6 hour SOP to be executed with 2 instead of 3 scientists.

10x

Cost reductions in reagents, enabled by RACs’ error-free handling of sub-microliter enzymatic reaction volumes.

How is Ginkgo Automation differentiated?

01

High-touch Support

Our support model is high-touch and ticketless. We provide active, remote troubleshooting rather than a ticketing system. We often resolve errors for our customers before they even know they've occurred. Ginkgo RACs are truly walkaway and don’t require babysitting.

02

Made By Scientists for Scientists

Ginkgo is the only automation provider that has extensively used its own product internally. We’ve created an automation system by scientists for scientists. Our team members have worked across biotech, big tech, and automation; we believe our product is better than any other automation solution on the market.

03

Workflows Built for You

Our applications team works with our customers to build workflows that not only function seamlessly on our hardware but also operate efficiently and in a biologically sound manner.

04

Modular

The RAC system is more modular, extensible, robust, and customizable than any other platform on the market. With RACs, if an instrument becomes a bottleneck, just add a duplicate RAC for that instrument. If a new instrument is needed for a new workflow, just add that instrument’s RAC to the existing system.

05

Cost-effective

There is no need for high-spend design and redesign efforts to build and extend your system. Add-ons and changes are all marginal spend.

06

Fast Delivery

We have some of the fastest delivery timelines on the market — as low as 1 month for system extensions, and as low as 3-4 months for new builds.

07

Reliable Hardware

We leverage industrial components on our systems, leading to significantly improved non-instrument (e.g. moving track; robotic arm) hardware reliability versus competitors.

08

Web-based Software

Our software is based on a modern stack, and is web-based. Scientists can launch protocols from anywhere, at any time.

09

Protocol Library

Ginkgo’s Automated Protocol Library is available to our users. We’re committed to sharing protocols we've developed and optimized over years of operating our RAC systems with our customers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

01

What do you mean when you say "modularity" and "flexibility"?

Our automation systems adapt and grow without constraints or complications. Unlike traditional systems that require complete redesigns and new capital investment for any instrument changes, our solution allows you to combine any instruments, in any number, in any order. You won't need a design engineer - if you can imagine an instrument combination, it's possible. No more compromises.

02

Could you explain the key differences between a traditional work cell and a RAC?

Each RAC includes everything found in a traditional work cell: a miniature robotic arm, industrial computer, sample storage nests, and one or two life science instruments — all within a safe, self-contained, environmentally controlled enclosure. The key difference: RACs feature an integrated conveyor system that connects multiple units into one unified system.

03

How many years have RACs been in development?

RACs have been in active use and continuous development for 8 years, used across Ginkgo's operations and Zymergen's before its acquisition.

04

How frequently do you add new instruments to your integration list?

Our instrument list is continuously expanding as we integrate new devices for both internal Ginkgo operations and customer needs. We support standard off-the-shelf equipment and custom instruments. Custom integrations require slightly longer lead times.

05

You haven’t integrated my instrument of choice. What’s the process for getting it onboarded?

Each new instrument requires an integration kit (i.e. a kit for mounting and locating the instrument and relevant accessories). The process includes hardware design and testing as well as developing software drivers. We typically test with an identical instrument in our facility before deploying to a customer via FAT and SAT. New instrument integration typically adds several months to the deployment schedule.

06

Teaching is a problem for the automation in my lab. How often do you have to re-teach?

RACs typically maintain accuracy for a year or more without re-teaching. — Adding new RACs doesn't affect existing teachpoints, and our dedicated gripper designs ensure maximum positional accuracy for each instrument - unlike central robotic arm systems.

07

What is the width of a RAC?

Most are 750mm wide. RACs which accommodate larger instruments are 1m wide.

08

Do customers have control over what data is visible to the Ginkgo support team? Are customers able to restrict access to confidential data?

Yes, you control what context is shared. Our support team can see operational data (e.g. barcode IDs, sealing temperatures, etc), protocol logic, and raw data from data-generating instruments. However, as we do not have access to your LIMS, we cannot deduce any meaningful content from this data. If you prefer, you can purposefully obfuscate the above data (e.g. protocol inputs, constants, etc) to further ensure your data's integrity.

Let's optimize your lab operations. Whether you're exploring new automation solutions or looking to enhance existing systems, we'll help you find the right fit — from off-the-shelf solutions to custom system designs.
